Smith Mountain Lake, VA (August 21, 2006) – After two years of research, consultation and review, The Willard Companies announced plans to move forward with a course renovation project for The Water’s Edge.

The company hired the highly recognized Aspen Corporation, a uniquely qualified company who has completed renovations at The Homestead and The Greenbrier golf courses, for the project. In addition, the company appointed golf architect, Richard Mandell with Richard Mandell Golf Architecture. According to Mandell, “Our goal is to maintain and preserve the integrity of the original Raymond F. “Buddy” Loving, Jr. design. At the same time, we will be modernizing the course from a construction, maintenance, agronomic and playability standpoint.”

Construction on the course began in August and will include a variety of course improvements. First, all greens will be completely renovated with bent (A1 and A4) grasses. These grasses are much denser in nature and will create a much more consistent putting surface and turf along with providing increased green speed. In addition, the new greens will be more disease resistant due to technology advances in herbicide applications. The renovation plans also consists of replacing irrigation systems, upgrading sand bunkers, enlarging teeing areas for a majority of the holes, and tree removal. An anticipated cost for the project is close to $3 million to complete. According to Ronald L. Willard, President of The Willard Companies, “Once renovation is complete, The Water’s Edge will become one of the premier courses in the Mid-Atlantic region.”

Currently the first nine holes are closed and will reopen Spring 2007. The putting green, range and back nine holes will close in early fall with plans to reopen Summer 2007. Water’s Edge members will be offered full golfing privileges at either of the other two Willard owned courses (The Westlake Golf and Country Club and The Waterfront Country Club) during the renovation process.

According to Willard, “Our goal is to take this course to one of the top playing courses in Southwest Virginia. By doing so, we will not only be adding value to The Water’s Edge Country Club, but to the entire Franklin County community as well.” The Water’s Edge first opened in 1988 and features 13.5 miles of shoreline and more than 712 acres. The 18-hole, PGA Championship golf course was originally designed by Raymond F. Loving, Jr., ASGC, a nationally renowned golf course architect.

The Willard Companies is the umbrella for Willard Construction of Roanoke Valley, Inc., Prudential Waterfront Properties, The Waterfront, The Water’s Edge, and The Westlake Golf & Country Clubs, and The Boardwalk.
